Sports & Remedial Massage

A deep massage, involving the manipulation of soft tissue to help assist and correct soft tissue imbalances often caused from repetitive and strenuous physical activity and trauma. This treatment is not just for sports people. Anyone can benefit from this form of massage including those who are involved in physically demanding jobs, or people suffering with occupational, emotional or postural stress which can mimic similar characteristics of sports injuries.

Especially effective for clients requiring deep tissue massage or with specific problem areas, this treatment can be performed as a full routine or incorporated as a technique within other massage treatments.

Trigger Point Therapy

A trigger point can be defined as a small area of tightness within a muscle which forms a tight band, a knot or tiny bumps within the contracted tissue. When a muscle over-contracts it prevents its ability to relax. This results in a restriction in the blood flow, oxygen starvation in the muscle tissue and a build-up of metabolic waste products, which lead to pain and tenderness being felt. The pain is not always felt where the trigger point is located. Referral pain may be experienced in other parts of the body. For example, a trigger point located in the back may actually produce a referral pain in the neck. The pain is often described as feeling like a dull ache or sometimes it may be more of a sharp pain.
Trigger point massage therapy uses a combination of pressure and release techniques which are performed in cycles to help alleviate the pain symptoms associated when active trigger points are located. Unlike some other forms of massage therapy, trigger point massage therapy involves quite an active role with the client. Once an active trigger point is located within the muscle tissue, the therapist will apply firm and deep pressure on to the trigger point and the client is asked to score the pain or discomfort on a scale of 1 to 10 where 10 is the highest. Through deep breathing techniques the client will notice over a period of about 1-2 minutes, that the pain/discomfort experience will start to decrease despite the pressure being applied by the therapist remaining the same. This method of isolated pressure and release serves to release the constriction within the muscle tissue, alleviating the pain experienced. There are great benefits of using trigger point therapy with clients experiencing an improvement to their symptoms after just one treatment. When trigger point therapy is used regularly within massage treatments, it is possible to naturally manage pain and stress caused by chronic injuries.

I do not carry out trigger point therapy as a standalone treatment, but instead incorporate it into my treatments where necessary particularly within deep tissue massage treatments, sports massage and remedial work.
